The European Space Agency offers a variety of traineeship opportunities for young nationals from the following countries.
Member States of the ESA are: Austria, Belgium, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Canada is a Cooperating State, and Latvia, Lithuania and Slovakia are Associate Member States, as well as Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus and Malta as European Cooperating States (ECS).
The training courses offered are:
1. ESA Postdoctoral Research Fellowships
The fellowships aim to offer young scientists and engineers the possibility of carrying out research in a variety of disciplines related to space science, space applications and technology.
Applicants must have recently attained or are about to attain their doctorate in a field closely connected to space activities.
The programme gives access to the expertise of ESA for two years.
2. ESA Graduate Trainees (YGT)
The programme offers recently graduated men and women a one-year non-renewable (paid) training contract designed to give valuable work experience and to prepare for future employment in the space industry and/or research.
Working in one of ESA's establishments offers the opportunity of working in an exciting international and multicultural environment.
Applicants should have a degree from a university or a college of technology by the time they start work at ESA.

These work placement options are offered to students to gain experience during their university studies as part of their degree course. These opportunities are available for technical as well as non-technical areas.
Students should have the following background:
- university students preferably in the last or penultimate year of a Master's degree in the fields of mathematics, engineering, physics, science and information technology.
